Take a look at some of the exciting banding station happenings!
A broad-winged hawk was caught in the summer of 2009. It was much bigger than the birds that are usually caught in the nets.
Since the hawk was so big, a bag was placed around its head before it was freed from the net. The hawk had very strong and sharp talons, and a sharp hooked beak (which it couldn't use- much-, since its head was in a bag) but it was fairly calm as it was removed from the net. Mr. Chace had to use his largest bird-banding pliers to close the band around the bird's leg.
See below for photos and a short video clip of the hawk's release!
Here is the hawk.
This is how the hawk looked as we walked up to the net to bag it. Look at how wide those wings stretch!
Here we are measuring
the hawk's tail.
Banding the hawk: the
biggest pliers had to be used, along with a very large band.
