The birds are caught in mist nets, which are very lightweight and hard to see... for birds and humans.

They are then placed in small cloth bags. The seams of the bags are placed on the outside to avoid snagging the bird's feet or beak.

After all the nets have been checked, the birds are carried back to the banding station and placed on the appropriate hooks. There is a hook for each net. The number of the hook and that of the net must match, as the net number is part of the data recorded.
