The Center for Northern Forest
Research promotes experiential, inquiry-based learning opportunities for
undergraduates interested in the natural sciences. Summer research internships
are available for qualified undergraduates. Internships provide opportunities
to learn a number of field ecology techniques, work closely with research
biologists and resource managers, conduct independent research, and assist in
the development of resource management plans.
Summer Research Interns will be
involved in many of the following research activities in northeastern Vermont.
Canada Warbler habitat selection
and reproductive success. Interns will learn to target capture and color-band
Canada Warblers, map territories, record behavioral observations in systematic
sampling periods, record positions with Global Positioning System (GPS) and
enter and manage those data in a Geographical Information System (GIS);
vegetation sampling and measures of prey (arthropods) abundance and diversity
are other elements of this study.
Determine the status and map the
locations of Partner's-in-Flight priority bird populations of the Eastern
Spruce-Hardwood Physiographic Region; species such as the American Black Duck,
Blackburnian Warbler, Cape May Warbler, Bay-breasted Warbler, Chestnut-sided
Warbler, and Olive-sided Flycatcher.
Estimate population size and
measure of bog-dependent butterfly species on the Nulhegan Basin Division of
the
Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife
Refuge;
species such as Oeneis jutta (
Arctic Jutta) and Lycaena epixanthe (
Bog Copper). (photo credit; http;//www.chebucto.ns.ca)
Assist Nulhegan Basin Division refuge
managers with a variety of tasks including mapping portions of the refuge,
removing invasive plant species, mapping plant communities, measuring avian
abundance at long-term monitoring stations, including a long-term M.A.P.S. bird banding station.
Assist with state-wide Vermont Butterfly Survey and Vermont Breeding Bird Atlas.
